Colts - Gordon Trial Preview

By Keith Holmes

This weekend is the start of the clubs official 3 trials and first up are the strong Gordon club who are on an upward curve after a few tough years. Their Colts have a long history of success and producing good players supported by strong juniors and a lot of good Rugby Schools dotted along the Pacific Highway up to the Central Coast. We haven’t played Trials against Gordon in the past 5 or so years that i know off and we are excited to see where we are in our preparation for 2018.

Coming off last weeks games against Bowral we might have a slight advantage having played a game but we have lost a few players with injuries and coupled with unavailability of some players due to cricket, surf boats etc we are only going to play 2 trials.  We don’t want to overcook the players this early in the season by playing more minutes than they are ready to play. It’s unfortunate but players welfare is the over riding factor in this decision. Therefore kick off for our first game is 11.30am at Redmond oval Rockdale with 1st Colts kicking off at 1pm.

What we are looking to get out of the trial? We need too build on last weeks trial especially in defence, keep working on line speed, line speed and more line speed from kick off to full-time. Good communication and plenty of physicality or you are not in the game. A lot of effort in training has been working on our defence pattern and it will be interesting to see how our structure holds up against some good attack especially when fatigued. The secret of playing in trials is to just play your position and not somebody else’s. We don't want tight 5 standing in the centres or outside backs trying to be 1st receiver or everyone playing back waiting for a kick to return. Just play your bit in the team jigsaw and you will play well.

Hope to see a few people at the ground and have a good days footy, not a bad way to enjoy your day. I have no doubt after watching the weeks training and the skills on show that we are going to wreak some havoc on the Gordon game plan.
Lastly i would like to give a big Rebel Yell to the Colts players who moved up to grade this season and are having there first game with the big boys. This group are an exceptional group of men who will bring a lot of excitement and commitment to the Grade group and they have been training extremely hard the past 4 months to be ready for there opportunity to play grade and i like to think being in the Southern Districts Colts program has given then the encouragement, attitude and skills and work ethic to make there mark.
