Colts Update Feb 2018
We have the Colts program rolling along smoothly under the direction of Don McKinnon who is working closely with Klinton Hoare the clubs Head S&C Coach who did a great Interview about the 2018 season which is on the club Facebook Page.
Our Colts trainers Joel and Carl are doing a great job on the players Weights and Fitness component and the players are starting to see the benefits of months of hard work kicking in and the testings are showing we are improving and will strip in good physical and fitness shape on Round 1.
Congratulations to all involved in the S&C program, it is being timed perfectly.
We are lucky to have excellent coaches in Don McKinnon, Michael Black and Gabriel Enright who are pushing the players and not settling for near enough is good enough. One of the sayings the players will hear is about making your bed. It was a saying we used a lot last year and we figure if its good enough for the US Seals it's good enough for Southern Districts Colts - watch this link: Navy Seal Admiral Shares Reasons to Make Bed Everyday.
There are so many facets to organising a season of Colts, we lose a lot of players each year due to there age making them ineligible so it’s a massive effort to get over 80 players each year to turn up to at least one training season which then gives us the required 65+ players we need each year to field 3 sides plus cover for injuries and sickness and unavailability due to Rep footy.
We are lucky that Southern Districts Juniors are strong in ability and numbers and have some hard working and dedicated people involved in the running of the juniors which interacts with the pathway from juniors to Colts.
We were disappointed about the SRU not going ahead with the U/18S but we are going to look at making our 3rd Colts as basically an U/18S team and be our development squad, similar to what we did a few years ago when we won the U/18S comp.
If any players 16, 17 or 18 who are keen to be involved with this please come to training on Wednesday nights starting at 6pm or Thursday nights starting at 6.30pm. We are also looking for a coaching group to coach this side and it all comes under the Colts umbrella so there will be a game pretty much every Saturday kicking of at 12.40pm Anyone interested in Coaching please contact me Keith@keithholmes.com.au or 0401930633.
This is a great way to come into Colts and get a taste of the next level of rugby and play in an organised competition and for a coach a great way to be eased into the challenges of Colts rugby and be part of senior rugby.
Recently I put out a plea for some furniture donations for some flats we were organising and as usual the support I received was over fantastic and we were able to fill the 2 flats and make nice homes for the players.
I have 1 last house to furnish and I am seeing if anyone has an old fridge, carpet squares, washing machine, pots, pans, crockery and plates. I think we are ok for other items as we still have beds etc left over from the last time.
I can arrange these to be collected, thanks to Rowland Kotobalavu, James Finch, Damian Johnston, Ryan Connolly for all their help with the furniture, tough work! Also to Glenn Loveday who is a true club legend.
As usual finding work for players is always a challenge and also finding workers for club supporters who have an opening is also a challenge, co ordinating the 2 is the difficult part and comes down to timing so I would like to put out that we currently have a great company supporter looking to fill an apprentice Cabinet Maker and anyone interested please contact me. This is a great opportunity for a young player to learn a trade in a booming industry within the local area.
There is also a great permanent part time job at Taren Point working 2pm to 6pm which might suit a Uni student? We have had players work there previously and the company has been great in supporting the players rugby schedule.
I have had a container unloading company contact me regarding the need for staff to unload containers in the Banksmeadow/ Botany area. Good casual work that could be tailored to suit your availability and good $$$. Contact me if interested but please no time wasters, I do not have much spare time!
Lastly if anyone works for a company that purchases Stretch Wrap or Packaging tape or plastic products etc please let me know as i need to get back into the good books with my boss! www.ashcroftpackaging.com.au
The 2018 season start is not too far away and finally with Xmas and New Year out of the way we no longer have to say next year, so the trial matches have been set and 3 very good official trials have been organised by the clubs GM Warren Robilliard.

Grade and Colts trials are:
- 10th March v Gordon @ Redmond Park Rockdale

A big Rebel Yell to our Southern Districts Under 20 players who are in the Waratahs Gen Blue program on their push for making the Australian Under 20s team to play in the 20s RWC in France
- Bayley Kuenzle
- Cooper Harris
- Jordan Morris
- Ryan Longville
- Nathan Lawson
- Ben Grant
- Sama Malolo (signed with the Melbourne Rebels)
These players are training twice a day with gym work and Field fitness and skills and are putting in a massive effort week after week, well done to all the players and there families.
Lastly, Don McKinnon has been putting together the UK Development Tour, the logistics of matches, accommodation, training is an enormous task to organise and lock in and a final itinerary is about to be released. The dates will be from 1st December to 18th December so stay tuned.
Players keep getting to training as competition for spots is going to be tough and if you have any mates interested in a game bring them along, the more the merrier and not long to go now and remember to make your bed each morning!
