Southern Districts Womens 7s
By Jessica Reading
Southern Districts Rugby Club is pleased to announce the amalgamation with the Women's Pride 7s squad. Based in the Sutherland Shire, Pride 7s was formed in 2017 by Live Athletic founder Justin Lang. What started as a training program for female athletes aspiring to be professional rugby players, soon developed into a NSW State Championship side. Five foundation members of the squad went on to represent NSW 7s and become National Champions. Olive White has now joined the Australian 7s development squad, and Cassie Staples made her Australian 7s debut in Langford, 2017. Staples continues to be a regular part of the Aussie 7s campaign.
Interest in women's rugby has soared after the Australian women’s 7s historic win at the Sydney 7s leg of the World 7s series. The team scored a total of 213 points and conceded 0 across the weekend. NSW Rugby Union (NSWRU) have announced their intentions to host women's rugby 7s gala days throughout the 2018 season, with 11 Shute Shield teams to be represented as well as squads from Suburban Rugby Clubs and the Illawarra region. Between these tournament dates, clubs are encouraged to arrange standalone fixtures on a weekly basis. The expansion is no doubt a sign that women's rugby is on the rise, and the tournament will give players not only more game time but also the opportunity to expand their skills. Southern Districts will be looking to host a womens rugby 7s gala day at Forshaw during the coming season.
Athletic Development Systems Director, Brett Gallagher will coach our Rebels side, assisted by former Australian men 7s player Michael Black and Australian women's 7s defensive coach, Dale Robertson. With the exciting announcement of the Super W to make its debut this year, and the continued growth of women's 7s nationally, the tournament is the perfect opportunity for the women to showcase their talent on the field. Southern Districts are very excited to see the Pride 7s squad don the candy stripes in 2018.
