• On April 29th 1770 Lt James Cook sailed through the heads of Botany Bay and landed on the shores of Kurnell, this changed Australia for ever. Eighteen years later the First Fleet sailed through the heads of Botany Bay, determined to establish a penal colony. After several days Botany Bay was deemed unsuitable and the colony was moved north to Port Jackson.
• The Sutherland Shire is seen as a desirable place to live, blessed with beautiful natural scenery. Beaches, waterways and nearby bushland are very accessible and extensively used by local residents and many day visitors, particularly from the southern and western suburbs of Sydney.
• The beaches and surfing at Cronulla are famous across Australia and internationally. They are one of the main attractions in the Shire, both for tourists and locals. The Cronulla beaches are the only Sydney beaches on the Sydney rail network system |
