Season 2010: Match Reports

1st Grade

Randwick 8th May Coogee Oval

A dominate performance from both 1st and 2nd Grade saw both teams account for the Galloping Greens on their home turf. A powerhouse performance in 1st Grade, both in attack and defence, saw Randwick with no answer on how to handle the pack or break the line in defence.

The Rebel’s first try which started 30 metres out saw 12 phases and Sita crashing over to take the rebels to 7-3 lead. Ben Schreiber then put a great hit on Randwick’s hooker and captain out wide, which jarred the ball for Sita to pickup, off load to John Ulugia who ran 20 metres to pass back inside to Ben Schreiber who started the play to score to make the score 14-3 after Nathan’s conversion.

With the scrum dominating a simple back row move in the thirtieth minute saw Ita, Nathan, and Nicky work it down the blindside take the tackle, then the ball worked back to go through six sets of hands and a great offload from Nifo to put Chris Kerr away on the opposite side to score a great try. Randwick pegged one back on halftime to make the score 21-8.

Then one of the all time forwards try’s straight after halftime saw a push over tighthead with Sita claiming it but one that will be talked about for many years to come. Tetera Faulkner, starting to lose his front rowers membership for scoring too many tries, got another one after some great lead up work from the backs.

A couple more penalty goals from Mr Reliable saw Southern take the match 41-29.

A great performance from everyone I would have to give a special mention to the front row for their dominance and laying the platform for a great victory.

The only thing that kept Randwick in the game was the back to back penalty’s, which yielded three tries; something we have to work on.

I know the boys can still play a lot better than that and will have to in the coming weeks to stay at the top of the table.

Parra next week which will be a real mental challenge hope to see everyone there.             .

Penrith 1st May Forshaw Park

1st grade on Saturday was expected to be a tough encounter and Penrith certainly provided that.

The game early on saw Penrith on the back of a 5-0 penalty count saw them with plenty of ball and dominate field position and lead 6-0 after 10 minutes. To our boys credit, saw a disciplined performance from then on and the forwards lead by John Ulugia and Nifo saw a great build up to put Chris Kerr, a very late replacement, next to the post to take a 7-6 lead followed by a great front rowers try by John Ulugia who is claiming he ran 50 metres to score but looked more like 5 metres to the naked eye.

14-6 lead at halftime saw South’s forwards come out and dominate the set piece with Nifo powering over from a lineout move, which is great when a plan comes together. Two more tries from new recruit Stephano Hunt and a try to skipper Josh Gamgee saw South’s cruise in the end to a 40 -13 win. South’s 1st grade should be very proud of their performance as Penrith are a very good outfit and seemed to be on the improve as a team and as a club. Well done to all grades for winning that makes it two weeks in a row at home where all grades have won. We now lead the comp outright in 1st grade and go to Coogee knowing we need to step up again against the Galloping Greens.

HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL THERE TO SUPPORT THE MIGHTY REBELS……..

Sydney University 24th April University No 1 Oval

A great day for both 1st and 2nd grade with one of rugby’s toughest assignments; beating Uni at Uni.

1st grade was a game of two halves with our boys playing a very physical and structured game, which ended up with two great forwards tries.

The first by Tetra Faulkner, in his words a 60 metre run, but it looked like 6 inches, then again who is counting and the second from our try scoring machine Ita Vaea. Both were great forward build ups, which will give our forwards a lot of confidence. The second was from some great work from the backs with a great cut out ball from new recruit Gareth Morton, which young Nicky Price scored under the posts; that’s a try in every game.

The second half showed you can never underestimate Uni with South’s leading 19 - 0 at the break Uni came out all guns blazing and with two lapses in concentration trailed 19-12 with 25 mins on the clock. Uni then launched an attack which saw South’s having no ball and having to make over 45 tackles straight on our line, which  Uni couldn’t penetrate with everybody contributing to the effort something that not many teams would have been able to do. The boys did themselves, the club and the coaching staff very proud, which now sees us three from three and playing Penrith at home, which we hope all our supporters come down and see on Saturday.
