Sylvania Bulldogs junior wins Samsung Try of the Week
Friday, 13 June 2008
NSWRU Media Unit
Keitel Bramston from Sylvania Bulldogs U11s has been rewarded for his amazing efforts in winning the Samsung Try of the Week.
The competition, conducted by the NSW Rugby Union, is open to all junior Rugby players across the state and involves players, parents, clubs and schools sending in video footage of the best tries scored each weekend.
Keitel's efforts have scored him a Samsung T10 MP3 Player valued at $269 and he now goes into the running to win the Samsung Try of the Year. All weekly winners will be judged by HSBC Waratah’s players and coaches with the best try winning a Samsung home entertainment system valued at $3,000.
The Try of the Week is just one element of the Samsung Rugby Program. Aimed at kids, the Program is designed to get kids involved in a series of fun, interesting events to encourage participation in Rugby, and has already seen the distribution of 15,000 Samsung backpacks to junior players all over the state.
Well done Keitlel and all the Sylvania Bulldog U/11’s for getting him over the line.

Australian U20s team to play Fiji at Junior World Championships
June 10, 2008 - 12:01pm
Story by: ARU
The Ford Australian U20s have today named their team for the Pool C clash with Fiji at the IRB Junior World Championship in Wales tomorrow (AEST). Highlighting the depth in the Australian line-up, coach Brian Melrose has elected to rotate his squad and has made nine changes to the team which blitzed Canada, 81-12, on Friday in Newport.
A new look front row of Albert Anae, Nathan Charles and Ben Daley are all set to receive their first starts of the tournament and will be expected to weather a strong Fijian pack. Steve Mafi also gets his run-on debut and will be joined at lock by Sam Wykes, while Captain David Pocock, Ben Coridas and Seilala Lam will form the back row.
Melrose has kept the all-Queensland halves combination, with scrumhalf Will Genia again set to start with Quade Cooper.
Rowan Kellam, who replaced the injured Kurtley Beale in the squad, makes his first start at inside centre with Ben Tapuai shifting wider to outside centre. The back three will see Blair Connor and Junior Sovala on the wings and Peter Betham making his first start at full back for the rested Dane Haylett-Petty.
The Australians will also boast a strong bench with Waratah’s Daniel Palmer and Rob Horne as well as, man-of-the-match against Canada, Ratu Nasiganiyavi all set to make an impact against Fiji.
Brian Melrose said improvement was needed from the last game and the team had to be careful of a dangerous Fijian squad despite a 51-27 victory against the Pacific neighbours in a trial match in May.
"We were pleased with certain aspects of the game last weekend and we hope to be even better than that against Fiji tomorrow.
"We know they will provide is with a real challenge, so we have to make sure that we are on top of our game."
“We can’t take out trial win against them as a form guide to what will happen tomorrow.”

Ex Rebel Now an Arabian Gulf International
Steve Huber who played for Southern Districts has certainly been moving around the world playing Rugby. Since leaving Australia, Steve went on a season exchange with Driffield then decided to move to The United Arab Emirates i.e. Dubai. Having now been there 3 years he qualified for residency and has just made their team to play in the Asian Five Nations team.
His Club, Dubai Hurricanes, won the Gulf Club Championship.
Below is an excerpt of the local information about the Arabian Gulf Rugby Team.
New Caps Get Their Chance
The announcement of the Arabian Gulf team to play Hong Kong in the historical inaugural HSBC Asian Five Nations in Al Ain on Saturday has eight new faces pulling on the international Gulf rugby colors for the first time.
The new look team selected from eligible players from throughout the Gulf has squad members representing six different clubs who have been preparing for the last three months for what will be four Test matches played over a five week period. One player who has forced his way into the starting line-up is Muscat captain Karl Sutcliffe. The Irish born forward will make his debut at blindside flanker after impressing Gulf selectors Steve Holohan and Wayne Marsters over recent weeks. “Karl took up the challenge when he was included in the initial training squad and he has worked hard at every session and has been a standout performer for Muscat especially toward the end of the club season.” said Gulf forwards coach Steve Holohan. Another newcomer, lock Steve Huber plays under Holohan in the top performing Dubai Hurricanes team and the athletic Australian will be a handy asset for the Gulf when they take on the semi-professional Hong Kong outfit.
The proud Doha RFC will be closely watching two of their own when club team mates Mike McKnight and Jaco De Jager get their playing orders off the bench on Saturday. McKnight the Doha team captain is a no-nonsense back row forward while De Jager will be hoping to get his hands on the ball to showcase his elusive running qualities on the wing.
Hong Kong have named a bigger than usual pack possibly hoping to outmuscle the Gulf forwards and the bulk of new debutant Jonathan Brookes will be needed in any close in exchanges. The 1.95m, 115kg Exiles forward will start on the bench but will relish any opportunities afforded him. In a similar mould is new strongman prop Fain Ferguson whose scrummaging prowess will be vital. Also hoping to offer substitute impact will be Abu Dhabi utility back player Mark Simon and the more than solidly build Hurricanes winger Graham Brown, both players have been consistent performers in club rugby for many seasons and are rewarded with International Gulf honors on Saturday.
The match will kick-off at 5:00pm on Saturday and will be played at the Al Ain Amblers Rugby Football Club (Palm Sports Resort), Al Ain.

Robert Horne in Australian Sevens
Robert Horne has been selected to play for Australia in the San Diego leg of the World Sevens. The initiative is a unique way for Rob to keep his match fitness up over the next couple of weeks.
Rob has played in the previous two Waratah trial matches against QLD and ACT and scored a try in the Brumbies match.
Rob can consider himself unlucky to miss selection for the next trial against Super 14 powerhouse, The Crusaders, but playing Sevens is seen as some consolation.
All at Southern Districts congratulate him and wish him well in San Diego.

“Kama” Bows Out
At the end of the 4th Grade game on Saturday 29th March a very long playing career comes to an end at Southern Districts. Life Member Chris “Kama” Oud plays his 200th consecutive and final game for the club. It is also his 460th (approximate) game for Southern Districts.
Chris has been an iconic member of the Club since it’s’ inception in 1989 and has been as active off the field, as he has been on the field. One of the founding members of the famous 4th Grade Family Hill and ever present in support of the Club we hope that Chris maintains his affiliation with the Club, once the boots come off for the final time.
It would be extremely fitting for as many people as possible to attend the 4th Grade game to show their appreciation to Chris for all his efforts, particularly in terms of what the Southern Districts spirit is all about… he is the epitome.
Everyone wishes Kama well for his final game and can only hope that he goes out with a bang with a great win over the Myrtle Green.
Chris you can be proud of what you have achieved at Southern Districts and the way you went about doing it.
Kama even though you were born a Kiwi you will always be a Rebel! |
