An Update From Ken McKay
Dear Southern Districts Rugby Family,
We hope in these difficult and changing times that you, your families, friends and loved ones are staying healthy, supportive, strong and where possible, at home.
As many of you may already know, there is much uncertainty around our rugby competition in 2020. Rest assured, we will keep you updated.
Despite the changes, our club is continuing to experience a transformation. After a lacklustre 2019, we decided to adopt a more professional program ahead of the 2020 season and beyond. Under Todd Louden as Head Club Coach, there has been a huge shift. Todd has changed everything. He has raised the bar. The professional improvement, attitude and motivation of the players and coaching staff has soared under his leadership. Confidence is high, people are responding, working hard and everyone has lifted.
Our new rugby program is attracting players back to the club as well as some fresh faces from across the country. Combined with our strategic recruitment planning program and we are looking more than capable of competing across all grades throughout the club.
Our intention is to keep the professional program for Grade, Colts, Women and Juniors going. We will continue co-ordinating our playing group from afar. Todd and his team of managers, coaches and health/wellbeing staff will ensure our players stay strong, stay fit and keep positive.
We will encourage regular check ins with players and ensure the mental health and wellbeing of all is prioritised.
We are looking very good indeed and when the season kicks off (2020 or 2021), we will be ready.
Our business model is one of the most unique, most flexible and most challenging ones in the competition. Responsibility for all of the costs across the park brings with it many challenges and also some advantages. We have more control over what we do, what we sell, what we charge and how we create revenue, but we have ongoing and at times, significant expenses.
The club has managed to lift revenue, increase profit and keep the place running well over the last few years. Whilst we have worked to have some funds set aside for a rainy day, the rain is now on our doorstep, in the form of COVID-19.
The last couple of weeks has seen the board examining our finances and we have made a number of difficult decisions, given the circumstances, all with a focus of remaining viable and ready to kick off when we are given the green light.
We remain steadfast. We are going to continue the good fight.
Many of our sponsors, even during these uncertain times, have committed to the club for the 2020 season. This is quite remarkable and shows a great level of commitment, passion and determination that is appreciated at all levels of our community. Thank you.
What else can you do to assist?
We have more than 75 sponsors in our club, from all industries including builders, trades, recruitment, logistics, IT, real estate, accountants, flooring, law, mortgage & lending specialists, insurance brokers, skip bins, cleaning services, indoor gardens, accomodation, and funerals. If you are looking for any of these services, please check our website first. You will not be disappointed.
Members are the lifeblood of our community. If you have not yet renewed or are looking at joining our great club, now is a great time to do so.
Sponsors are the ones who enable us to do more. Your contributions over the years have helped us build a new rugby program for 2020. If you are looking to support the club again in 2020, please get in touch with Warren, Karina or myself.
We recognised early that we needed to be prepared. We are committed to our whole community and will navigate these unusual times with professionalism so that we come out the other end better, stronger and ready to go.
Please look to our social media channels for updates from across the club, as well as the many things the players have been challenged to partake in while in isolation. We see this as a great platform to engage during these times.
If you have any questions or concerns, or hear anything that causes you to wonder, do not hesitate to call me or one of the other board members known to you, to get more information.
