Update From Keith Holmes
Last Saturday we played our 2nd trial of the season against Western Sydney Two Blues at a very wet, windy and Cold Granthan Reserve Seven Hills. The day was always going to be tough against a big and strong opposition and the conditions increased the challenge by a few more levels. We had 6 x 25 minute blocks and as per the week before we mixed the teams so everyone got plenty of game time and every opportunity to put there name forward for higher team selections in future games.
The final result was a 7 tries to 6 tries win to the Two Blues who played very well in the final 2 game blocks and their bigger players and game style were more adapt to the wet and slippery conditions.
Overall the trial was a great success and again our defence was a strength but i felt we need to make sure we follow up a good passage of play with another good passage of play. We defended our line like Trojans and win a turn over penalty but make a mess of our line out resulting in an easy try to the opposition. Every try scored against us came from an error after a strong period of play.
The big plus for me was the continued improvement in our scrum. The coaches and players have been putting in extra time and effort at training and the results were there during the game where we would have been 100kg + lighter than the the Two Blues pack and in wet and slippery conditions yet our scrum was solid. We have a very inexperienced tight 5 who are getting better each week so a big Rebel Yell to the tight five players, great effort.
Unfortunately due to the virus and laws bought in by the government to fight the virus we have no training sessions or games until the 2nd May which is going to be tough.
Last Tuesday the club had a meeting of nearly 100 players, coaches and support staff where Todd Louden spoke at length about the latest updates on the season, how to protect from the virus and also the plans moving forward over the next 6 weeks.
The challenge has been set to the players to continue with their own training. Weekly programs will be given to each player, Jarrod our head S&C trainer will be monitoring each player daily through our Team Builder App plus the GPS monitors.
The club has invested this year in technology to monitor and record players training and playing efforts which is why some players are at International player fitness levels and will be crucial in helping the players and the coaches get through this 6 week period. Knowing the resolve and commitment of the clubs playing group we will come out of this 6 week block in a stronger position than the other clubs and Todd has raised the bar on our end of season goals which the players have enthusiastically accepted the challenge !
So game on and buckle up for a great ride.
Club President Ken McKay gave a strong and reassuring speech letting everyone know the board is 100% supportive to navigate the club through this period. we are fortunate to have Todd Louden supported by a strong group of coaches, managers and support staff heading the rugby program and leading us through this time of uncertainty that changes by the hour and couple this with a supportive board , great Sponsors and the best supporters in club land rugby we are in a strong position to get through the 2020 season and turn a negative into positive.
What ever happens we will be ready.
Special Note: We have some players who have joined the club and are desperate for work. They are happy to do anything even if it's casual or ad hoc thats fine. All have work CV and any help will be appreciated.
