ABOUT SOUTHERN DISTRICTS RUGBY CLUB
We are a long-established Sydney rugby club with deep roots in the Shire and a clear focus on building a strong, connected and competitive future.
Jake Douglas
Club Captain
Southern Districts was formed through the amalgamation of two proud clubs, St George and Port Hacking, each with its own distinct history and contribution to rugby in Sydney.
St George Rugby Club, founded in 1906, was an early force in Sydney rugby and produced a long list of representative and international players. The club experienced periods of success and challenge across the decades, including interruptions caused by World War I and later relegation and promotion, but remained an important part of the game’s history in the region.
Port Hacking Rugby Club emerged from the southern coastal communities of Cronulla, North Cronulla and Wanda. Beginning life in junior and lower-division competitions, the club built a reputation for competitiveness and resilience, earning promotion to Sydney’s top competition in the early 1970s and establishing rugby in a rapidly developing part of the city.
The amalgamation of these two clubs brought together heritage, people and opportunity. While change was not without its challenges, the combined club quickly focused on building facilities, strengthening pathways and creating a sustainable future at Forshaw Park.
OUR ORIGINS
Today, Southern Districts fields teams across senior grades, Colts and women’s rugby, and works closely with independent village clubs to support junior development across the region.
The club has enjoyed periods of strong on-field performance, including grand final appearances and premiership success at grade level, and continues to focus on developing players who progress through clear pathways into Colts, senior rugby and representative programs.
More importantly, the club remains committed to being a place where people belong. Whether as players, coaches, volunteers or supporters, Southern Districts provides opportunities to stay involved in the game and contribute to a strong rugby community.
OUR CLUB TODAY
Southern Districts is shaped by its history, but not defined by it.
Our focus is on:
strengthening participation across all levels
building clear development pathways
delivering competitive, well-prepared teams
creating an inclusive and welcoming club environment
ensuring the long-term sustainability of rugby in the region
This is how we honour those who came before us, by building a club that continues for decades to come.
