Injuries - The Process

  1. It is the player's responsibility to immediately report any injuries to Mark (Jock) Edgar. Injuries will be treated on game day by our Head Physio or his team, or the Match Day Doctor.

  2. For soft tissue injuries or general physio treatment, players should attend the Rebel Clinic at Southern Districts Sports Physiotherapy on Monday evenings (further detail below).

  3. Significant injuries are managed by our Club Medical Specialist Coordinator, Harry Dale (further detail below).

  4. Injury updates are then provided by our medical staff to our Coaches for team selection by Tuesday morning.

  5. The Physiotherapists and Doctors will communicate with the coaches regarding players' injuries and fitness for matches and training.

  6. The player's should always speak directly with the coach/manager regarding any injury as well.

  7. If a player has not had their injury assessed, it is assumed that they will be able to train as usual that week.

  8. It is expected that if a player seeks treatment outside the Medical Staff provided by the Club, that they consult the SDRC medical staff first.

Costs

Players are responsible for understanding the costs associated with medical treatment at all times, whether that be out of pocket expenses, private health contributions or insurance refunds.

The Club Program has been designed to ensure minimum costs are incurred on players for the specific level of care required.

Clinic

Players will have access to the exclusive Rebel Injury Assessment Clinic on a Monday nights from 6-8pm. Bookings will be done after games on Saturday, for players who require immediate triage to those players who have sustained non-long term injuries.

The clinic will cost $25 for the appointment.

Standard Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy for short-term soft tissue and joint injuries, appointment (1 on 1) – players will be offered a discount rate $88 (your health fund will cover some of this cost depending on your level of cover). This will be run during normal business hours throughout the rest of the week.

INVEST IN THE GAME

Training

A Physio will be in attendance at SDRC training sessions. Strapping will be provided.

We encourage players to do their own long-term strapping where possible. Acute injuries should be strapped by the physiotherapist.

Player Insurance

We strongly recommend players at Southern Districts Rugby Club have private health + extras cover.

ALL players MUST be registered through FuseSport PRIOR to playing in any matches, in order for your player insurance to be valid. Any unregistered players will not be permitted to participate in games until you have registered.

Please discuss with your team manager whether you need to fill out insurance forms with respect to specific injuries.

Player insurance will not cover any injuries unrelated to Rugby.

Serious Injuries

For all serious injuries, players are to complete the ARU Insurance form and have the club administrator sign the document.

It is the players responsibility to have the insurance form completed and lodge the claim within 30 days of the injury!

This insurance plan provides payment of 100% of Non-Medicare Medical Expenses after any reimbursement from your Private Health fund.  A $100 excess applies to each and every claim and the maximum benefit payable is $3,000.

Rugby Australia Claim Form

For the 2022 Season Insurance will be facilitated by AON. If a player is injured during training or a game, please refer to the following: https://australia.rugby/participate/rugby-administration/insurance

BEFORE submitting a claim the Rugby Australia Injury Report form must be completed https://australia.rugby/about/codes-and-policies/safety-and-welfare/serious-injuries

SDRC Administration staff will provide you with your registration number and certify the document as a club official.

It is the player's responsibility to obtain all required information (including a Doctor's and Physiotherapist's report) and send the claim form to the nominated address.

Quick Steps to Follow

  1. Pay medical fees upfront

  2. Claim all Medicare Medical Expenses from Medicare

  3. Claim all Non-Medicare Medical Expenses from your private health fund

  4. Submit a claim to the AR sports insurance plan (as per above)

  5. Complete the Claim Form

  6. Lodge the claim form within 30 days of the injury

  7. Lodge additional documentation as required

  8. If you are still out of pocket following ALL of the above steps, you can make a claim to SDRC’s injured players fund in October each year, where you must provide copies of all receipts/rebates.

Please note: Additional documentation may/may not be required in addition to the claim form (Step 4). Therefore, it is important to submit your claim form as soon as you have completed the details, within 30 days of injury, even before you have all accounts/receipts. This will ensure limited delays to the claims process.egistration number and certify the document as a club official.

It is the player's responsibility to obtain all required information (including a Doctor's and Physiotherapist's report) and send the claim form to the nominated address.

Physiotherapy

Southern Districts Sports Physiotherapy have been our physiotherapy, massage and strapping partners for more than 20 years. Situated in professional premises in our club, we depend on them for their high levels of service and knowledge.

Injury management is critical to successful player recovery. Mark Edgar and his team provide a highly specialised rugby focussed service allowing players to benefit from a skilled assessment, an accurate diagnosis and the latest evidence-based, hands on management techniques, to allow them to minimise their recovery time and maximise their sporting performance, whether lower grades or elite sporting level.

Concussion

At Southern Districts Rugby Club and in line with national policy, it is a requirement that all players who suffer a concussion seek the highest level of medical care reasonably available and follow Rugby Australia’s return to play policy to ensure concussion is managed appropriately.

We support our players by ensuring that our managers, coaches, support staff and medical staff hold player welfare at the heart of every action taken as a result of concussion.

On The Day Of The Injury

Recognise, Recover, Record and Return

If a player has signs or symptoms of a potential head injury or concussion, no person (e.g. physio, coach, trainer, or doctor) can over-ride the requirement of a player to remain off the field.

The following documents are provided to a player, or parent/guardian, on the day of the injury:

On The Days Following The Injury

Recognise, Recover, Record and Return

For any player diagnosed as having concussion the stepwise graduated return to play (GRTP) process must be followed. The referral & return form must be completed.

If this isn’t completed the player will be excluded indefinitely from full contact training and match play.

"Southern districts has given me opportunity after opportunity. It is one of the most inviting clubs you will find, you always feel welcome here. South’s will always be home”
