WELLBEING PROGRAM

We take a holistic approach to our professional rugby program. Just as important as playing the game and training for the game is our overall approach to health and wellbeing.

WE INVEST IN OUR PEOPLE

Mental Health

In 2019 we were lucky enough to have Joel Curtis join our broader team. Joel is the owner and Principal Psychologist of Endeavour Wellness. His approach is to listen to people and he doesn’t like telling people what he thinks they should do. His goal is to help people understand themselves so they have the skills to be able to help themselves.

As well as general wellbeing support for our players when required, Joel runs club wide and small group sessions that hone in on 4 key areas.

Concentration In Sport

Providing players with helpful strategies and techniques for overcoming negative thoughts, the opponent and any distractions that are associated with anxiety.

Confidence In Sport

Helping players improve their self-belief and self-confidence so they can believe in the abilities that they know they have deep down.

Sporting Control

Helping players manage control over their adrenalin bursts while using any nervous energy or anger in their favour so they can stay in control and focused on the goal at hand.

Sporting Commitment

In being committed to their sport, many players will build a life around rugby. However, with a lack of progress or injury, their commitment can be undermined or dwindle. Joel can help players stay committed and focused to achieve their goals.

Life Skills

In 2019 we welcomed Ian Bond to the team to undertake the Life Skills program.

Life Skills has been introduced to the club culture as a holistic approach to the “One Club” motto and a recognition that development of players occurs on and off the field.

Bondy has a psychology degree and over 25 years’ experience in Human Resources across 5 continents and has run a number of Olympic and Rugby World Cup campaigns.

We have looked at a number of topics giving the players skills to apply to life now and into the future including:

Resume Writing

    1. The 8 second rule – the average time a recruiter will look at any CV

    2. KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) – It needs to be short, concise and relevant

    3. Network / Network / Network – 80% of jobs are secured through who knows you.

Behaviour, Networking and Sexual Harassment

    1. Seize the Day – The responsibilities we take on and off the field and how we do it

    2. Sexual Harassment – Know your rights and everyone else’s

    3. Toxic Masculinity /  Tea and Consent

Networking for Career, Life and Community

    1. Navigate the dark art of networking and show how easy it can actually be.

    2. Fail early and often

    3. The power of now

Standards – Values – Targets

    1. To know our genuine values is to know our DNA

    2. Standards –  Align our values and ask what will we be accountable for?

    3. Targets vs Goals – why the difference is important and  setting 2020 targets.

The Life Skills program will look into future networking events, mentoring and more practical skills fundamental to being a positive member of the Rugby community and society in general.

COVID-19

We have a responsibility to protect our entire community including players, volunteers, supporters and their families by ensuring we follow all of the guidelines and all of the protocols in relation to this pandemic.

Plan

We have implemented plans, processes and systems to meet government and health requirements, and provide a safe sport and community environment.

Respond

We are prepared for management of a COVID-19 outbreak, noting things can change quickly even in well planned and prepared environments.

Prepare

We have ensured safe facility and participant practices, like hygiene practices, attendance registers at training and limiting shared equipment as much as possible.

Recover

We have plans for ongoing consideration of protocols to optimise good public and participant health into the future. We believe this is essential in our environment.
